WITHIN THE MIND UPDATE FROM JAMES MURPHY. It's been a good while since my last update and I apologize. [I've]been quite busy with the WITHIN THE MIND project, which for those who don't already know is the star studded tribute to Chuck Schuldiner and DEATH that I have been working on, as well as a few guest appearances which you will be able to read about on my personal site. Here's a list of everyone who has recorded so far...this includes all the way to back to the start of the project and brings us right up to date as of last week: Richard Christy (drummer from Death, Control Denied and Iced Earth), Mark Hunter (vocalist from Chimaira), Matt Thompson (drummer from King Diamond), Matt Difabio (vocalist/guitarist from Single Bullet Theory and Pissing Razors), Bill Mezic (bassist from Single Bullet Theory and Seven Witches) and most recently.... Jason Bittner (drummer from Shadows Fall), Matt Bachand (guitarist from Shadows Fall). Yes, a couple weeks ago I traveled to Albany, NY where I was picked up at the airport by Jason Bittner and we headed directly over to Hydrostatic Recording Studios to begin setting up the drums and getting tones for the session. We started recording the drum tracks and rough guitar tracks for 3 Death songs (not telling yet!) the following day and Shadows Fall guitarist Matt Bachand showed up a little later that morning to be on hand to record guitar parts for one of the songs. The session went very smoothly and it was easy to tell that Jason had been playing the songs for quite a while and when you finally hear his performance on the CD there will no doubt as to why Modern Drummer Magazine recently awarded him the #1 Up And Coming Drummer Award. Matt and Jason both kicked ass on the tracks and once again the high standard set by Richard Christy at the beginning of the project was maintained! Next up I'll be heading to the NY area again to record for the project with Dave Culross, Brett Hofmann, Ross Dolan, and others. Check the tribute site for pics from the session Thanks... After the storm calms down, KATAKLYSM will take most of 2005 to put the next album together (something we have never done before - TAKE OUR TIME!!)... Even new drummer Martin Maurais only had one month to put all his drum tracks on Serenity! So with 4 albums out in 5 years, which have all outdone each other and all have been highly acclaimed, we wanna make sure the next one will be up to par. Hell we want it to be our Masters of Puppets, our Reign in Blood!!!... Unlike previous statements, the album will not be self-titled. I have a killer title for it and will unleash it when the time comes. The reason we are talking about the next album already is because we have so many ideas floating around and the writing level is peaking right now. Brutality is flowing to the next level, so we just wanna start putting shit together and keep working on it till it's perfect. We are still extremely satisfied with Serenity in Fire, we just feel we have some great momentum and wanna keep moving forward... And by the way - the new Dismember rules, go get it!!... BATHORY'S Thomas "Quorthon" Forsberg Passes On.... BATHORY's official web site has posted a tribute to late BATHORY leader Thomas "Quorthon" Forsberg at: www.bathory.se . As first reported by BLABBERMOUTH.NET on June 8, Quorthon was found dead in his apartment in Stockholm, Sweden this past Monday (June 7). The 39-year-old son of Black Mark Records owner Börje Forsberg, widely considered to be one of black metal's founding fathers, is believed to have died of heart failure. No further information is available at this time.

IMPALED NEWS The purveyors of gore, more commonly known as IMPALED, have been holed up in the studio the past month recording their highly anticipated Century Media debut offering and plan to emerge with their most outlandish work to date. Their new album, Death After Life, shows the Bay Area unit in their most vile state, so expect nothing but sheer putrid insanity. Sean McGrath (vocals, guitars) checks in with the follow studio report, "Contrary to what you've heard about us isolating ourselves in hermetically sealed rooms, saving jars of our own urine and refusing to cut our fingernails, we've been busy the last few weeks recording, Death After Life, the new IMPALED album. With our new guitarist and all around nice guy Jason Kocol (Madera Road, Puny Humans, Qoqol, Slaughterhouse Flies) in tow, we entered Take Root studios in San Francisco on May 7th to begin recording what will no doubt be a turning point for music and dare I say, humanity as a whole. Trey Spruance (Secret Chiefs 3, Mr. Bungle) is producing it and Billy Anderson (Cathedral, Mr. Bungle, L7, Sleep, and many others on his long list of credits) is handling the engineering duties. After many sleep-deprived nights we're finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. We're finished recording all the music and vocals and Trey is now isolated in a hermetically sealed room mixing the album amongst jars of his own urine. It should be about a week or so until it's done, depending on how easy it is for him to use his keyboard with fingernails that have grown to more than six inches in length. Upon completion we will deliver it to Century Media in a Brinks Truck surrounded by armed guards, but it'll be awhile before those of you who want to hear it can. BLOODBATH has posted the following update regarding its forthcoming Century Media release Nightmares Made Flesh, additionally recording session pictures are posted here. The recordings for NIGHTMARES MADE FLESH are finished and the master has been delivered to Century Media tentatively scheduling it for an autumn release. We promise you a fukking brutal and varied piece of work with especially outstanding performances by the new members Axe and TÃgtgren, proving Bloodbath is no longer a tribute to death metal; it's death metal's very own elite.
